I need a dust collector. Where do I begin?
You determined that you need a dust collector. Whether you have a small lab in your practice or a large operation, the different options and variations can seem a little overwhelming. Below we will go through different factors when considering a dust collector to hopefully make the decision process easier.
Step 1: Number of Users and Volume
How many users will be using the dust collector and how much volume is being generated?
Dust Collectors for ONE User
If it is a single user, then it makes sense to look at a small dust collector without multiple inlets. Handler makes several small-scale dust collectors for a single user such as the 62-II, 550A, 550, 52CSU, 100C and 200C. Smaller dust collectors are the ones to gravitate towards if usage is only intermittent as well. However, there are some smaller models that also can handle continuous usage such as the 62-II, 550A, 100C and 200C. If a small dust collector is being used continuously, it is especially critical to monitor the filters and not let them get overfilled. If you find that the filters are being changed constantly, then it might be a good idea to opt for a larger dust collector. Large dust collectors are generally best suited for continuous usage.
Dust Collectors for TWO Users
There are dust collectors designed specifically for two users in mind. These dust collectors have two inlets with hoses. The hoses can be configured to accommodate each user’s workstation. Handler manufactures the 62 Super Sucker and 60UFC to be used by two users at once. It is important to consider whether the dust collectors will be used sporadically or constantly. The model 62 Super Sucker is designed for intermittent use, while the 60UFC Dust Collector is designed for more continuous usage.
Dust Collectors for MORE THAN TWO Users
There are dust collector options available for more than two users as well. These dust collectors have several inlets that allow for hoses to be connected and arranged to multiple workstations. Examples made by Handler include the 77DC and 101 Dust Collector. These dust collectors come with 3” diameter flex hose, allowing for easy customization to optimize your workflow. The large dust collectors can handle continuous operation, and although they are designed for multiple users, they can be used by a single user if the volume is quite heavy. Inlets can be closed off if not needed with the P101-31 Red Cap for Dust Collectors. The volume and number of users is one of the first things to consider when looking for a dust collector.
Step 2: Application
Will the application affect the dust collector decision?
The application will certainly influence the decision regarding the dust collector for a dental lab. Different applications generate varying amounts and types of dust (acrylic, ceramics, plaster, stone, zirconia, etc.), which necessitates different levels of filtration and suction power from the dust collector. For example, if your lab primarily deals with fine particles from materials like ceramics or metals, you’ll need a dust collector with high-efficiency filters to capture those particles effectively. On the other hand, if you’re mainly working with larger debris from processes like grinding or trimming, you might prioritize a dust collector with strong suction power and larger capacity. Understanding the specific requirements of your lab’s application is crucial in selecting the most suitable dust collector to ensure a clean and safe working environment.
Step 3: Work Area
What is the best dust collector for my workflow? Assessing your work area.
After you determine the number of users, volume being generated and application, it is important to assess your work area to determine the most optimal setup. If it is determined that a large dust collector is needed, then I would find a space where the dust collector can be situated. It needs to be close to the users and allow the hoses to be easily configured for each workstation. 3” flex hose can be used or PVC piping depending on what would work best for the layout.
If it was determined that a small dust collector is most appropriate, then the countertop space is something to consider. If countertop space is limited, then it would be best to opt for a dust collector that can go under the counter or off to the side of the workstation. Under the counter dust collectors that are small include the 62-II, 550A, 100C and 200C. The hoses on the under the counter dust collectors can connect to a fishmouth, riser or splash hood situated on the countertop.
Furniture that easily accommodates a dust collector is something to consider if your current setup is restricting. Handler manufactures a wide range of lab furniture and many come included with dust collection. The PTL-215SP comes standard with the 62-II Dust Collector with options of in-drawer suction and benchtop suction. In-drawer suction with the 210T allows for more countertop space. The benchtop suction option is made easy with a 3” suction inlet and blastgate on the riser of the workstation. Having functional furniture options allows for seamless dust collector integration and a more efficient workflow.
If countertop space is plentiful and there is no need for an under the counter dust collector, then the 550 or 52CSU can be utilized. The model 550 is great beside a Red Wing Lathe or use with a handpiece. The 52CSU is ideal for full enclosure if the application is especially messy or it is being used with aluminum oxide. Overall, understanding your work area layout will make it easier to choose the right dust collector.
Now that I selected the dust collector, what do I have to do regarding upkeep and maintenance?
All dust collectors made by Handler include filters, which need to be monitored, cleaned, and changed periodically. A common question is: how often should I change the filter?
The changing of the filter is entirely dependent upon usage – how much dust is being generated and how quickly. The manuals that come with the dust collectors will provide guidelines, but it is important to monitor how much dust is being generated in the early stages of owning your dust collector. Then, develop a cleaning and changing schedule accordingly. Some users might need to change filters every 3 months, while others might only need to change the filter every 6 months. All Handler dust collectors are designed for easy access to the filters, and we recommend that they are changed if deteriorated or full of dust. We advise that they are changed even before they are completely full (3/4 full). Aside from changing and cleaning the filters, it is important to periodically wipe the machine of any debris while unplugged. Lastly, if the dust collector uses brushes, then they may eventually need changing, which will be explained in further detail in the owner’s manuals. Overall, there is little maintenance required for the dust collector. The most important element is changing filters when needed.
