What is a Splash Hood?

A splash hood is a crucial protective device designed to contain and control debris, dust, and splashes generated during various procedures, such as grinding, polishing, or sandblasting. Resembling a hood in shape, it often includes a shield and a pan to collect polishing compounds such as pumice or Tripoli rouge. This enclosure not only offers visibility but also prevents particulate matter and liquids from spreading into the surrounding environment. As a result, it helps maintain a clean and safe workspace, protecting both the technician and the lab equipment from contamination.

What Are the Uses of a Splash Hood?

The splash hood was created specifically for dental laboratory polishing and grinding applications when creating and fabricating dental restorations. Many other artisans use splash hoods though in fields such as jewelry, hobby craft, audiology, podiatry, industrial applications, and manufacturing processes. Virtually any application that involves polishing and grinding can apply.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Splash Hood?

When purchasing a splash hood, several components need to be considered to ensure it meets your specific needs:

Size

The size of the splash hood, particularly its width, is an important factor. While depth and height are often standard for many models, the width can vary based on personal preference and workspace requirements. The width also affects the pumice pan’s capacity to collect particulates. For instance, Handler offers splash hoods in 6”, 8”, and 10” widths, providing various options to accommodate different work areas.

Shield

Splash hoods typically come with a plexiglass shield that hangs in the front. This shield is recommended for cleanliness and safety and is crucial for OSHA compliance. While Handler offers splash hoods without shields, and the shields can be removed if not needed, it is not recommended. Having a shield is generally beneficial for maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Light

The lighting and the position of the light are also important considerations. Handler manufactures splash hoods with or without lights, and the light assembly can be positioned on either the right or left-hand side. The side on which the light is situated can make a difference, especially if the splash hood is placed on either the right or left side of the lathe. Handler’s model 86D comes standard with an LED light fixture for clarity.

A flange can be added to the backside of a splash hood to connect a dust collector hose. This piece fits over a cut-out and allows for the secure attachment of a dust collector hose, typically with a 3” diameter. If needed, an adapter can be purchased to accommodate hoses of different sizes, ensuring compatibility with various dust collection systems.

Blastgate

The blastgate functions like a sliding door, closing off the flange to shut off suction. This feature is particularly useful if the dust collector is connected to multiple splash hoods, allowing the user to control suction and use only the desired splash hood at a time.

Construction Material

The construction material of the splash hood is mostly a matter of personal preference. Handler produces splash hoods made from powder-coated steel (such as the 86D), hard resin (like the 86RHL), and aluminum (such as the 84 and 85 series). All these materials offer durability and functionality in a laboratory setting, ensuring long-term use.
